PHILWOOD EXPO & CONFERENCE 2026: PCEPSDI Moderates Discussions on the Sustainability and Future of the Wood Industry
Last May 8, 2026, Mr. June Alvarez, President and Executive Director of the Philippine Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Inc. (PCEPSDI), served as the Panel Moderator for the Philwood Expo & Conference 2026 held at the Subic Bay Exhibition & Conference Center, presented by the Philippine Wood Producers Association Inc (PWPA) and co-presented by RIZOME.Â
The conference celebrated the significance of the wood industry in the Philippines and was attended by industry professionals, corporate representatives, and public officials. Discussions on the event highlighted the impact and contributions of the wood industry to environmental protection, livelihood creation, and the establishment of sustainable architecture, and explored the industry’s future directions in the country.Â
Among the speakers was Russel Smith, the President and CEO of RIZOME, who discussed the role of bamboo in carbon offsetting and the development of low-carbon structures. He emphasized that sustainable and low-carbon construction can be achieved through the use of wood and bamboo, as demonstrated by RIZOME’s initiatives and products.Â
Mr. Benjamin Mead, the President of Agarwood, also discussed the nature and business potential of agarwood production in the Philippines, highlighting how innovation in the forestry and wood sector can generate jobs and sustainable livelihoods.Â
Meanwhile, Arch. William Ti of WTA Design & Studio emphasized that wood is not only a structural material used in architecture and construction but also carries symbolic meaning, particularly within the Philippine context. He showcased innovative, socially responsive designs that use wood as a key architectural element.Â
Lastly, Atty. Felix Alicer, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), presented the current landscape of the country’s wood industry and discussed the department’s position and future direction for the sector.Â
During the panel discussion, questions focused on the sustainability, innovation, and long-term development of the Philippine wood industry, particularly in balancing economic growth with environmental protection.
As the Philippine wood industry continues to evolve, the event highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in shaping its future. The discussions and insights shared by the speakers emphasized the sector’s potential to contribute not only to economic growth but also to environmental protection and sustainable development in the country.
