CALL FOR COMMENTS

Through the Scaling Sustainable Consumption and Production (Scaling SCP) Project in collaboration with GIZ, the National Ecolabelling Programme – Green Choice Philippines (NELP-GCP) was assigned to develop an ecolabelling criteria for the selected product category, which is the PVC Pipes and Fittings. The activity involves comprehensive life cycle considerations to identify the significant environmental issues. This activity aims to enhance public awareness, to promote durability, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness of environmentally-preferable PVC options. Collaborations with industry stakeholders, government agencies, and international standards are integral to achieving improved air quality, reduced hazardous exposure, and a more sustainable PVC industry in the Philippines.
The criteria development highlights the identification of key environmental hotspots in the life cycle stages of PVC pipes, particularly during installation, resin manufacturing, and end-of-life. Rigid or unplasticized PVC pipes and fittings (PVC-Us) become the focus of product criteria due to their exclusion of harmful plasticizers like phthalates, and emphasising product lifetime extension. The Philippines, adhering to international standards through the Philippine National Standards, aligns with global ecolabelling programs and best practices and guidelines of other countries. Overall, the draft criteria aspires to improve the product’s quality, minimise the environmental impact, and align with national laws promoting environment-friendly choices for both consumers and producers.
To fully integrate the perspective of various stakeholders, NELP-GCP solicits comments and inputs on the draft ecolabelling criteria for PVC Pipes and Fittings.
All interested individuals or institutions may submit their comments or suggestions via email to greenchoicephilippines@pcepsdi.org.ph with subject title “Comments on the Draft Ecolabelling Criteria for PVC Pipes and Fittings” on or before 23 February 2024.
